Looks like it won't be long before the ST gets a Fiesta-shaped friend to take over the day-to-day stuff...

Good choice on his part, although mine will just be the 1-litre version when it arrives.

Naturally. Going to be the 125PS version so ought to be ok at keeping up with traffic when needed.

Ecoboost is a surprisingly good engine, we had one in dad's mobility car, a focus 100BHP, tolok some getting used to but 50MPG is easy if you know how. Got a Fiesta myself but a 61 plate 1.4 TDCi, BIG upgrade from the 56 plate Clio Campus, that said though, i did 17000 miles in my first year, projected this year at least that again.

I think it comes down to what you want from the car. For me the Ecoboost is the obvious choice for what I'm using it for, but with it being Anx's only car (I presume) then the attractions of the ST are obvious and it is a very good car.

I know where shanklin's coming from on getting used to driving it too. I only had a test drive in the 100PS, but that was still capable of giving you a decent shove in the back, certainly much more than you'd expect from such a small engine, but you do need to keep the turbo spooled up. Below 2000rpm or so, it's obvious that you're in a 1-litre, but you'd only be that low when pottering around in traffic anyway

I just but purely on how much I giggle after the rest drive.

Dating that though, I've just achieved a staggeringly good 33mpg average on a 1000 mile weekend, 600 of those on a motorway, all fun miles and the rest all town.

Considering the fully laden car, in heavy winds and heavy traffic, that's damn good.

Actually, it's the view from the back which I like best on it. Definitely a good move going for the coupe, and the blue suits it much better than the silver one I saw today.

It does look good from the back, amazing what adding a roof can do. So much better looking than the soft top, and ye, the coupe was a wise choice. it's a pretty rare car too, had to go all the way to Essex to get that one. Pics (or at least those ones) don't really do it justice, it's a beautiful thing in the flesh.

Most importantly of all, it's an utter joy to drive, the run flats are a bit skippy, but will change those to normal ones when they are worn out. It makes an epic noise too, even when just normal driving, and then open it up, and it's really quite exciting Very pleased with it.

Good fuel economy too for a big engine, managed 30mpg mixed driving so far.

3.0 N52 engine Doony? Same engine as my 1series. Beautiful noise over 4k rpm. I manage an average of 35 on a run, but only low 20's around town.

That drops sharply to 12 for any amusement driving

Yes mate, the N52, I've managed 39 on a run, but have to be honest, that was crawling at 60, lowest mpg Ive had is 17, with lots of red lining, manage low to mid 20's about town. But I have a work van for commuting, so it's really only a weekend car, so fuel economy doesn't matter. It makes an awesome noise, taken the sound proof foam out as well, so now it makes even more noise, especially in sport mode.

Bridgestone run flats are pretty awful though, while they have tons of grip, the tramlining is terrible, so they will be going in the next few weeks.

Is that all down to the run-flatness though? I know when I got the Focus, I didn't notice the firmer ride so much as the fact that it seemed to actively seek out grooves in the road to run down. I put that down to it being on low profile tyres (225/40 R18s) rather than any particular fault with the car and rarely notice it now.

That said, now I have the Fiesta on its higher profile (195/50 R16) tyres, it is noticeable how much better the suppression is of road imperfections and that includes the fact that it doesn't seem to tramline at all.

So, moral of the story is a well known one. Lower profile = more fun in the handling department, much more communication of how bad the roads are too

I switched from potenza RFT to PZero Rosso non RFT . Plenty of grip in 90% of situations, and a good 10% of fun situations, when you can inform them to slip. BMW msport suspension accompanied with RFT is just god awful. Ride quality has improved no end. Still stiff, but also forgiving on the lanes and in town. Wet grip also improved as the flex in the tyre wall helps it not skip.

I fitted cruise to mine, and on cruise at legal motorway speeds I'm averaging over 40, with traffic etc, the total average is 36 at the min. Not bad for 3.0 near 300bhp petrol silliness.

Well I did a run to my brothers earlier, and managed mid 40's on the M4, final journey was 39mpg, and that includes being stuck in traffic, seems to have made a difference switching to Vpower (was using BP Ultimate) Which as you say, for a car that will happily scare the crap out of me if I let it, is pretty good going.

Will change the tyres to Goodyear F1's, seem to be quite a popular choice on the Z4 forum, and come in at a resonable price for a premium tyre.

As John pointed out, it's a combination of the msport suspension and the tyres, though at lower speeds they do really like to wander when I hit certain imperfections in the road, it's a well documented problem on the Z4 especially, so next month they are going. Saying that, when I want to thrash it on the B roads, I can do so with complete confidence and many grins, super happy with it so far.

Can't argue with the F1's - they're my tyre of preference. Certainly grip wise I feel they beat the BFGoodrich and P Zeros I've also had on.

Oddly enough, the only tyre I've had which got close gripwise was a Marshall at little more than half the price of the Goodyear (screw through the tyre, emergency replacement) although that did grip did come at the price of a shorter tyre life.

As you say too, the price is good for a top end tyre. I know I'm in an FWD so it's not quite a like-for-like comparison, but I'd still say you're on the right lines.
