Internet speed

I have been having really bad upload/download speed for the last few month ( 0.5 gig ) compared to the 5 gig i was getting when we all tested our speeds for race pro.

Can anyone think of any reasons why this has happened?

This morning i have moved the router from the faceplate downstairs to the one in my room but still the same crap connection.

Could getting a new router solve the problem?

Any help would be great, thanks.

The problem's most likely your ISP. Nothing you do locally should make that much of a difference, unless you go from XP to vista. Vista has a tendency to strangle network traffic.

5 gig? I hope you mean 5m

You haven't hit any dload limit your ISP puts in place have you? Even when you have unlimited broadband most ISP's have a fair usage policy. They may have throttled back your speed if you have been dloading a lot recently. As others have said your ISP is the likely cause so I'd give them a bell and ask them what the crack is.

It is Bank Holiday Monday today, classed as peak-time to some ISPs, a lot that throttle now also cut back speeds
Quote:
'so that everyone can enjoy broadband...blah, blah'

Also as slim says if you have been downloading heavier than usual you will see restrictions in place for a day or two. Check your ISPs webpage, if you see nothing about fair usage and throttling give them a call and rant and rave.

Right, you are on ADSL, or phone broadband.

You need to phone them again to get them to sort it out,as you are not getting what you are paying for at all. This is way different from a "not close to the exchange" example they might give. You need to tell them it is unreasonably slow and you are considering going elsewhere. That usually gets them to pull their finger out.

That's quite bad, but why are you testing to ireland?

I just tested to Derry, and while the ping is terrible, the U/D wasn't too bad.

I'm guessing its phone broadband as the router meeds to be pluged into the phone socket.

As things stand i cant do anything for 3 weeks as i am not the bill payer.

They did say it could be BT's fault?

I'd try testing to a server on the same bit of land to you, to see if you get any difference. Try Birmingham or maidenhead.

Another thing to try to get your "proper" ping is to go to the run command in your start menu, enter cmd and on the black box that arrives, type "ping www.bbc.co.uk"

your command prompt will show something like this after you've done it:

Click the image to open in full size.

You can see that over 4 attempts (by the computer) my average ping is 26ms

From the router to the internet, nothing. From the Computer/console to the router, however, it all depends on distance from the router. If you are next to it, you should have no problems whatsoever. If you are not in the same room, you may well start to lose some speed.

My honest advice to anyone is to use wired if you can.

When do you think we'll see the upload revolution? In america, you can get a service from Verizon called FiOS which gives three different services:

15d/5u
25d/15u
50d/20u

All those are in megabits, giving over 1MB/s upload speeds on the two fastest packages.

In the UK we can only get (in general) kb uploads, no matter how fast our downloads are. Also, we have the problem of fair use/limited downloads. I'm lucky being on Sky Unlimited B'band, which is a truly unlimited service (no fair use policy) but as far as I am aware, this is the only one.

Im no more than 3m from the router and moved the box slightly before to get clear line of sight avoiding the victorian thick brick wall.

I thought the article about fibre optic connections was very funny last week, unless you live in a town or city your stuck with a dialup world. On my list to get connected would be Real gas and mains drainage the chances of getting a fibre optic cable are nill. I know we have a main optical cable running through the village but thats a mile away

Also, does having two computers running off the same wireless connection slow it down much?

I don't believe it would, the only thing you have to look at is how much capacity you are using. if you are using a 54Mb/s router, two computers networking could reach the limit (approx 7MB/s) but that is still unlikely. The actual theoretical maximum slowest wireless speed still outstrips the fastest internet supply as is (but not for long)
