well today it came so after taking apart the side of my case i thought i'd route some slightly new cable management. not that any can be seen from the window but i now know its neater behind and easier to open/remove the back panel lol.

Here is the new card compared to the old one, HD6950 Flex vs HD3850

Here is my custom made SSD mount although camera on phone is useless.

And other than adding the card in i added my custom made rocker switch fascia and placed the cold cathodes in a well hidden from my seated eye line otherwise it was like a cars fog light right in front of you lol.

still to do other than state above with internal powder coating/anodizing:
+braid all the internal cables, thinking black with a red stripe weaved in although you won't really see it i'll know its there.
+make/solder some of wires (& then braid them) to the cold cathodes to allow for neater cabling and to allow for two more to be housed in the upper compartment.
+i'm sure there is something that will come to me later lol.

let me know your thoughts =D

Looks great man....im definatly jelous! Very nearly ordered a PC Case yesterday....but i've decided to wait untill I can order it all at once!

Just a couple of questions.

Are you going to get a fan controller so you can control the speeds of the fans/turn the leds on and off/monitor the temperature?

Does that GFX Card support Direct X11? And will you be using it for BF3 or will you need another upgrade?

EDIT: Also why have the DVD Drive all the way down there lol?

You can order PC's bit by bit, i did with mine but make sure it isn't on parts that will date like CPUs and motherboards. DVD drives will always be just that along with cases and fans etc.

I have the rocker switch fascia plate for the cold cathodes.
The Fans are Sharkoon Silent Eagles 1000's and so are slow spinning for minimal noise as one thing i hate more than anything else is fan noise. They're running of the headers from the motherboard so the speed can be monitored but i don't need them lowering or anything like that.

Thats another reason i went for the FLEX version of my GFX card as its got a Vapour Chamber in the cooler so runs about 15-20'C cooler so slower fan speed/noise

yes the card supports DX11 and unlikely need to upgrade but should it be a real drain on my PC i'll just buy another card identical to mine and put them in CrossfireX

The drive bay fascias are brushed alli and the rest of the mid section is plane alli so with the dvd drive matching the rest of the lower part of the case more i thought it looked better there, plus helps with running cables short distances otherwise i'd have required a longer SATA cable.

Very nice build mate. Clearly a lot of tlc has gone into this. I know that the SSD is a lot faster, but was it worth it for the price tag? I've been considering getting one myself. Is your OS installed on your SSD? If so, does is boot super-fast?

Its one of those items that you could live with out, but.... once you've used it you don't want to lol.

It really really really does make a difference. PC loading up a program/game/booting into windows is so fast.

I pre-ordered this and at the time was 185, its now 154.99 @ OcUK

SSD is my OS boot drive along with Steam & Origin although games i don't play often or that don't require a quick boot time like TF2, AvP etc etc i've moved using Steam-Mover so they're on one of my Samsung F4's to save space for BF3

That's pretty much my plan. Probably wait until the new year now, but I'm certainly tempted.

they're nearly down to 1 per Gb which does sound alot compared to the 2x2Tb drives I got for about 60 each but performance is there =)

TBH, it depends on your budget, if you need to save money and put that towards a better CPU or GFX card then that is where money is better spent. An SSD is really a luxury =)

Very nice build so far mate! I have to say the excitement of turning on a custom built PC is so nice. I remember building mine a few years ago, the first time it booted and loaded up windows SUCCESS! Anyways.
How Is BF3 running on the new build? and why a i5 not i7? I am not that familiar with the numbercodes of i3/i5/i7, but Ive heard that the i5 2500k should be one of the best?

Indeed, I have fortunately never had an issue with any of the PC's I've built.

i5 over i7 purely as they are more identical when it comes to games and general use plus with the money saved I was able to buy an SSD which is more of a performance boost than 4 extra processing threads. [Basically i7 at the time was about 150+ more expensive and I have no plans on editing videos or anything that would use the cores multithreaded abilities]

BF3, in one word, superb!! I've had no issues so far other than my stupid internet dropping out but that's as good as I can get out in the sticks

I class that video as typical Apple marketing, vague and all for visual affect

I'll probably get my 3rd SSD in a few months when I upgrade. This one has been good but is older gen and tops out at 160MB ish and things have moved on

I've been reading up on SSD's as I'm looking at sorting a new PC.

What do people tend to use their SSD for? Most of the reports I have read mention running your OS from an SSD but do people also run other programs from it.......and if so what sort of stuff is best to go on a SSD??

P.S. I'm a total layman with this sort of stuff as you can probably tell

It's not so much what an SSD 'is good at', and more about getting value for money. You pay a lot more per gigabyte of space for an SSD. Most people will use an SSD for stuff that will show the most benefit from the extra performance, typically Windows and your games. You'd then have an additional regular hard drive for other stuff like music and videos which don't require the performance of an SSD and can take a lot of space up.

You might pair up say an 128GB SSD (around 150) with a 1+TB hard disk (around 100).

Cheers chaps - with regards to running games from an SSD, is it just load times that show an improvement or are there in-game advantages??

Loading performance, the difference depends on the game.

I just remember their appalling customer service when something went wrong. Try Scan, plus their local(ish) so you can pay online and pick it up later that day.

God - I'd not thought of that, with my patience levels locality is a major draw!!

You're not really helping with the resisting though

Well I got bored and bought a HD 7970 off the OcUK MM lol.

None of the games I played needed anything more powerful but thought why not lol. I'm also finally getting around to get the watercooling on the go.

175 rather*

edit. Guy wanted to downgrade so I sent him my 6950 and paid the difference

edit2. 6950's go for around 80 these days and 7970's around the 275/300 mark so I think I got an alright deal.

I'm trying to resist a Haswell upgrade. That said there's nothing much wrong with my current PC, just getting itchy as the mainboard will shortly be getting it's "I am 6" birthday badge.

I'd probably keep the ATI 5850 and upgrade that at a later date, so looking at 400 ... which is kinda XBox One money. Hmm.

what cpu you got?

the i5 2500k OC'd to 4.5 is fine for now - very little performance gain with new haswell from first reviews

Xeon X3360 which is essentially a Core 2 Quad Q9550 in disguise. Mildly overclocked from 2.83 to 3.4GHz.

Original CPU was an E6750, the Q9550 was a bargain secondhand upgrade from the OcUK MM.

Is that on an old 775 pin motherboard?

You'll see more return from a better GFX card in game though surely? It can't be a huge bottleneck

Yep, an Asus P35 one. Can't recall the model at the moment.

The 5850 seems good enough for most titles. Unsure if the latest cards would bottleneck on the PCI-E v1 bus before the CPU. That and the 8GB RAM limit. Doing well for a 6 year old though with it's mid-life nip and tuck.
