DiRT Rally

I thought I'd scare you all and post something for a change, instead of lurking logged out.

Anyone else picked up DiRT Rally? I can't remember the last time I played a rally game that actually felt challenging. I have no idea if it's realistic or not, but it certainly feels less arcadey than recent rally games.

(PS Add me on Steam - MVG Woody - so we can compare stage times so I know how slow I am compared to Slim and co)

It's the first time since errmm... CMR2, that I've been ok with not beating the AI. And there's long term strategy as damage follows you between races. I've found that losing 15 seconds a stage by driving slower is better than losing 15 seconds by binning the car as you haven't got 2 seconds/stage of damage haunting you afterwards. I now drive positively slowly and seem to be sitting at 2-5th place in Pro class. In fact I got a "green" split at one point while driving so slow I thought I'd be way down (though it was all 1 and 2 corners on ice)...

Really thrilled that this game is out, I'd been playing Dirt 3 and desperately wanted more rally content, and then this came along a month later, just as I was already planning on a gpu upgrade!

LOL, just bought it, fired it up, started the first stage and I realised I couldn't brake, so popped out to windows, tried my wheel in the game controller properties, and sure enough no brake, I reset the wheel and it's borked!!! It just turns on, full fans, but won't move, and just clicks like it's skipping on a gear when you turn it!!

I've just contacted Thrustmaster, but being nearly 18 months old, I suspect they may not be too forth coming!

It's definitely an amazing game, in both look and feel. I reckon it could breed a new generation of rally games.

Just got my old Fanatec CSR dusted off, whilst the Thrustmaster TX is hopefully going to get RMA'd..

Wow, this game is different, I can see me enjoying the difficulty, but it's got one hell of a learning curve, two minor quibbles

1. The brakes are weird, no feedback or linearity, I'll need to tweak the wheel settings I think
2. On the fanatec, there is a real FFB deadzone in the first 15 degrees or so, something I see a few comments on, hopefully they can sort that easily

Other than that, I'm with Pirate, Ultra settings look pretty decent (GTX970 here), and the scenery when it's not foggy and overcast is quite good!

Think my card was $530, so about 270. Not bad considering we're normally charged crazy prices because PC Gaming isn't that big over here. It's slowly becoming more popular, and I've just joined an Assetto Corsa forum. I'm way off the pace on Time Trials (no change there).

I had noticed, about a minute slower than me in the Mini on Dffryn Afon Reverse (iirc - the stage names are really tough to remember)

Just got world #22 on Sweet Lamb in the Mini Cooper S entirely by accident (7:14.599). If I wasn't in championship mode (the driving state where I definitely try to get the car home safely) I feel I coulda done a bit better or a hell of a lot worse than that. Chuffed isn't the word!

Absolutely loving this at the moment. A massive surprise and gives me hope for the future of codies.

Anyone with a wheel who thinks the ffb is slightly lacking some kind chap over at RD has come up with an excellent fix FFB tweak (no void) | RaceDepartment

This really brings the ffb alive and makes the game so much better.

Just managed to win a rally (Monte Carlo, elite, 60's) outright! And used the proceeds to get myself a Subaru, finally! The sense of satisfaction is unreal!

I saw on Pistonheads yesterday that this is coming out soon on the consoles. Does anyone know if it's the same one as above and basically the PC version coming to console, or a whole new edition.

Judging by what you've said above, I suddenly find myself being tempted for when I want to leave PCars' tracks.

(Actually, thinking about it, if I want to leave PCars' tracks, I could just run the Lotus 98T in the rain)

Won't be immediate (too little time, too many calls on cash), but give me two or three months and I'll be looking at it, particularly on what you've both said. Don't think I've really come across a really good rally game since Richard Burns and Mobil Rally Championship before that so it will be good to get a proper rally game again.

Many consider it the true successor to RBR. So if that floated your boat this will be right up your street

And just to add, Pike Peak all dirt version is epic. That is all!

That's great to hear. Used to love RBR on the original Xbox.

The Wales one in particular definitely seems to have a Mobil 1 Rally Championship vibe about it. This is a good thing

Definitely a good thing. That was the first game I played on the long and expensive sim racing road I have been on ever since

Dirt rally is an excellent game. It is difficult to start with but so, so rewarding when you get it right.

Someone elsewhere asked me to do a Group B vid so thought I'd post it here as well.
