Looking for a book - Cant remember title

Hi, hopefully someone can help.

I'm not looking for recommendations here but I'm trying to remember the title of a book I read years ago and want to revisit, some details:

****************
Its set in southern america between 1920-1960, I believe its closer to the 1950s. The story focuses on a black family, and in particular the children of the family, and how they face and overcome local prejudice and racism.

The family by all accounts is one of the richer black families in the area and happens to own their own farm, which later comes under threat of repossession. This is a plot point resolved by their brother who works 'in the city' and he sells his car to raise the cash they need.

Some other major plot/story points I remember:

They 'embarrass' a local high profile racist white family by driving over a bridge first and forcing the whites to reverse their car. (Whites think the car is being driven by someone else)
The daughter goes to market with her grandmother, but cannot understand why they have to set up their pitch at the back.
The children who are angry at having to walk to school whilst the whites get a bus, dig a trap for the bus with a large puddle of water.

Then lastly the culmination of the book is a fire in one of the fields, which threatens not only their farm but the farms around them as well.

*********************

I'm amazed at how much of the plot I can remember, but cant remember the name of the bloody book!

If anyone can help, let me know

Yeah!

As soon as saw the title I knew it was right, I'd been googling for books with 'lightning' in the title so I was nearly there I got the period nearly right - 1930's but the school bus and the fire are in there.

It is a childrens book so probably no more than a light read for me these days, but I really enjoyed it so am going to track it down.

Its also a miniseries with Morgan Freeman made in 1978 which could be worth a watch.
