Steam Console / Steam Big Picture

I see the 'Big Picture' more is now out for Steam. Had a quick look on my PC and it looks nice.

I'm not sure how many people are going to want (or be able to) have a gaming spec pc near a TV. I know some people that already have a PC not far from a TV so I guess it's ideal for that. Opens up Steams audience from primarily serious/focused style sat at a desk, to the more relaxed games maybe played with a pad on the sofa.

Quote:
Steam Big Picture, the mode that transforms Steam into a big-screen service easily controllable with a gamepad, is officially live now, following a beta that began in September. To celebrate, a range of games that fully support controllers are on sale through December 10 at 10 a.m. PT, some for up to 75 percent off.

A few games on sale are Tiny and Big: Grandpa's Leftovers, Castle Crashers, Portal 2 (now with split-screen), Left 4 Dead 2, A Virus Named Tom and Mark of the Ninja. There are more than 30 games on sale, all of them featuring full controller support.

Steam breaks down games into full and partial controller support: There are 41 games with full support and 387 with partial, though on the Big Picture sale page Steam lists 70 with full and 851 with partial, so there may be some hiding in the rafters. All games are accessible in Big Picture mode, though not all support gamepads, of course.

Looks like the rumour of a Steam Console have been more or less confirmed.
Valves Going to Take On the PS4 and Xbox | Gizmodo UK

I think 2-3 years ago I'd say this was a pretty pointless with Xbox/PS3 having too stronger platform in the living room. In the past they were really good value for the hardware too.

Now I'm not so sure though, Steam has a really strong library of software, and game hardware that's 'good enough' isn't too expensive.

I think the biggest threat from mobile gaming is it's flexibility, and it's put thoughts in my head like wishing I could play the same games in my living room environment as I do on my PC. With steam you could do just that.

In terms of online features and community I can't think of many platforms to challenge Xbox Live but Steam is definitely one of them.

Think this might just work. I increasingly can't be arsed to traipse upstairs and fire up the PC or 360 in the spare room once the Mrs has gone to bed so a capable but not ugly looking PC under the TV might just see me gaming more often.

it won't give top spec gaming pc's a run for their money, but at 720/1080 it will run things like bf3 perfectly fine in high quality.

I don't get it. Why not just buy a micro form factor PC? As far as i can see this is all this will be without Windows.
So it's either a console (which it sounds like to me) or a micro PC (which is what peope are trying to make it out to be) in which case it's rather pointless imho.

Oh well, wait and see i guess.

The idea is to make a living room suitable PC which is a turn key gaming system. It's not like you can't already do this, but the point is making it a product and as simple as a console. I wouldn't be surprised if it just boots Windows and auto-launches Steam in Big Picture mode. Bound to encourage people to play Steam games in their living room when it's that easy.

I looked up some Intel HD Graphics 4000 benchmarks and it's definitely improved but still about half the performance of the AMD APU and some way behind discrete graphic solutions. Can't complain for 250, but if gaming was a primary use I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole

I see alot of the hardcore PC fanoyz are already up in arms saying it means PC games will be made for old technology and built around a simple platform.... but surely they are already? Most PC games are designed with console in mind first as that's where the sales are. And those games (BF3, FC3 etc) that can will push PC tech that bit further.

@Tricky : Thanks. One very good thing this might do is bring down the price of downloadable games and content from Live and PSN - as in comparison with Steam they are on the whole majorly over-priced.

The X7a top end gaming modular PC is in the region of $1200(700 roughly) and that's the pre order price (buy now and receive later when the product has finished being developed), so I would assume full retail will be higher.........

bit pricey , could get a gaming lappy for that sort of price bracket, and probably enough for a hdmi cable long enough to reach the sofa...................

although the lappy would need replacing every year(if you're a hard core gamer) where as the x7 cud be upgraded................

steam console to run linux

The steam box is gunna be running Linux, so by buying it you relegate your pc game collection obsolete(cant see steam allowing wine or the like to be installed so that you might have a chance) and have to purchase them again online from steam...............mmmmmmm, rather spend the cash on the x7a and run windows myself..............

Steam now runs on Linux.
And anyway they will be using Linux in the same way as Sony's Home and Xbox's dashboard - not in a full blown PC kinda way. Hence why it's more a console.
All it will more than likely have on it is a version of the current Steam we have on our PC's powered by Linux.

And that little box is not what the Steam console will be, it's just the idea behind the tech and the company behind the design.

I reckon the Steam console will be a plastic box that sits under your TV looking as unobtrusive as possible with built-in WiFi, running games at 720p and will be priced at or around 400 to start off.

That will need to come down for it to take off though.

You might even be able to transfer your licences for games you already have on Steam (they let you do this with 2 computers as it is) to the console.
In fact they would be stupid not to.

Interesting to see that Xi3 are now saying their 'Steam box' will come with Windows 8. Makes far more sense to me, given the library of games available.

Xi3 pushes back at Valve, calls Piston | Ars Technica
Xi3s Piston Will be a Windows PC, its Maker Reminds the World | Gizmodo UK
Steam Box will come with Windows 8 preinstalled- The Inquirer

Nope

Still don't really see the point in it. But they must have some form of long-term goal.

But yeah...... so far it's just a mini PC.

I thought I was going MAD! I looked and saw PSU, GFX Card, HD etc... and thought...DIY??

I know the PS4 and Xbox One have been mocked for being mid range gaming PC's but that IS a gaming PC setup with a custom OS.

Im not mocking it as im interested to see what they come up with...but I will say this...THAT CONTROLLER! YUK!

Reminds me of one of these...

To be fair that looks like a basic prototype unit. What you are seeing is a case with the rough components in and some little bits of flare added in. Think the finished item will look a lot better.

Sooooo ... it's a Mini-ITX PC not so cunningly stuffed Xbox One sized case by using a PCIe riser. Not quite seeing the revolution there, and the GeForce fan is going to scare the cat.

Mini-ITX gaming builds are common as muck nowadays.

Guessing that's a NUC based machine Andy?
