Meh! Looks prettier, sounds nicer, few good ideas but when are we going to see some real innovation in gaming?

Have they actually shown the console yet? Can only find mention of the (already leaked) controller.

I watched until the end and didn't see any console, stream was crappy throughout so might have missed it, but pretty sure it would have been plastered all over the interwebz if it had been shown. I can't believe they have stayed with the same crappy controller. It's too small and it just amazes me that they still haven't swapped the positions of the dpad and left thumbstick.

That controller is just nasty, it's one of the things that steered me away from the ps3

Not sure I get the whole touchpad thing. Seems too much of a stretch for thumbs to use it.

i disliked the PS3 controller that much I bought that adaptor and a wired 360 controller to use instead.

I sold the PS3 about 3 weeks after I bought it, really really didnt like it.

The PS4 will have to have something pretty amazing compared to the new xbox to sway me.

Had all the previous playstations too, loved them, but want feeling the 3 at all.

that controller looks gash, it looks like a dualshock3 with gaffer tape wrapped around the middle!

Just got email from Game to pre-order PS4!!! They really are skint! Who preorders something before 1: knowing when its coming out, 2: Knows what it even looks like!

(Come to think of it...most of those fools you see outside Apple stores whenever a new "I" product is released)

I like the fact they have obviously thought about ergonomics a little this time with the shaped back and triggers and dents in the thumb sticks.
Still in the wrong place mind.
Maybe get it right for PS6?

Edit: Looks like it's still tiny as well. So shouldn't be a problem using thumbs on the touch pad. *Sigh*

Quite a good technical right up here;
Quote:
...given the cited number of FLOPS it should perform just a bit better than AMD's Radeon HD 7850.

Quote:
A balanced, well-considered console

The PS3 was, in many ways, the last and most ambitious example of the "old way" to design a gaming console—going with a custom-designed chip and hoping that developers, with enough time and effort, would be able to squeeze better and better visuals out of it as the lifespan of the console continued. The "old way" also dictated putting the biggest, fastest, most-expensive parts into that box that would safely fit, done both to make the graphics as impressive as possible on launch day and to lengthen the console's lifespan.

The PS4 (and, according to rumor, the next Xbox) reflects the way computing has changed since the last time new consoles were designed and released. Rather than using expensive custom-designed chips like Cell, it's using gently tweaked versions of off-the-rack PC parts from AMD. Rather than going for top-end chips, the console uses modern midrange parts that are faster than the consoles of yesteryear, but don't approach the heights of a high-end PC.

This approach that the PS4 takes may disappoint those who value their polygon counts above all else, but to us it seems quite sensible—the PS4's hardware makes all the right compromises between price and performance, and the result will hopefully be something reliable with good power usage that doesn't cost 599 US dollars.

Anyone in the know errr know what it would cost to build a PC with those specs?

Consoles were supposed to be a bit special, different.... not just an old PC in a shiny box as these will be.

Back in the day they were. NES - PS2 era consoles were all part specific bits of kit. But look back then at what PC's were around!! Consoles would destroy the average household PC. But times have changed. Home computers have caught up and surpassed the average console in tech terms so it makes sense for companies to economise and use home computer parts to build the next gen consoles. The only issue remains is it is holding PC's back.

I was watching the news last night and they had people going on about the PS4 and how consoles will be dead over time due to the handheld/mobile market is getting bigger. In my opinion consoles are more or less here to stay. Nothing beats sitting on the sofa, grabbing a controller and going online shooting, racing etc with a few mates. I find gaming on mobile devices awkward to be honest.

At that price (399) I may hesitate at pre-ordering. Depends on what more we learn at E3, and what games are bundled at that price.
