Here's a couple. Board, CPU and RAM pre-assembled:
Click the image to open in full size.

Installed in the case:
Click the image to open in full size.

Cables were already routed from the old build. 90% of the cables are in a similar location. Lterally just swapped the board and plugged them in.

Temps look good so far so I'll probably cancel the refurb H100 watercooler that's somewhere on a (very) slow boat from China.

Haven't looked in my case for months, I can guarantee it will be a disgrace in terms of dust.

It's three years since I did a major overhaul of my gaming PC. Sorely tempted now

In it's final spec it was a Xeon X3360 (which is a Core 2 Quad Q9550 in disguise) overclocked to 3.4GHz on an Asus P5K-E P35 board. It started out with an dual core E6750 and ATI X1950 six years ago and got various upgrades thrown at it along the way.

Case is only a couple of years old. PC was re-shelled after I dropped it after a LAN bash.

The X3360 was bought secondhand about 18 months ago via OcUK MM, and got sold last week for 5 less than I paid for it after someone put up a wanted ad. That and a faulty DIMM was enough of a kick to get me to upgrade.

Not specifically overclocked the Haswell at the minute. The board appears to ignore the Intel settings and just clocks it at 3.8Ghz across all four cores out of the box. Temps are good in this weather - idling at 37C, 70C under load with the fans in normal mode. It's a good 10C down on the Xeon using the same cooler in lower ambient temperatures.

I'll take it to work and give it a blast with the compressor next week. The front filters are a tad furry too, but not overall it's wasn't bad for a couple of years usage.

Performance / boot times etc. improved or noticeably quicker?

Boot Times - not that I'd notice. I put an SSD in the old machine about a year ago which made a big difference. At least the new board will unlock SATA 6G for that and PCI Express v2 for the graphics card.

Performance - it's a bit snappier in general use. I'm still running the same Windows install as it just worked. Removed the old drivers/utils and installed the new ones.

Games are way quicker on the more demanding titles. F1 2012 was benching around 40fps on the quad, dropped to 22 fps when I put the duo back in. It's now 90fps+ with all the eye candy on.

Other processor intensive tasks like video transcodes are over two times quicker.

The Haswell upgrade is well worth it for S775 Neanderthals, not so much for Sandy/Ivy users. Here's to another six years!

PCI Express 3.0 no?

And I'm going from Sandy but having had everything in boxes for so long now I'll have forgot how quick my PC was and it'll feel worth it that is how I'm justifying it anyways LOL.

Yeah Haswell is PCI-E v3. The 5850 I'm using is v2, and was running in at v1 speeds in the old board.

Oh damn =/ lol

I don't think current cards even if 3.0 compliant take advantage of the bandwidth yet.

Part 2 arrived today :

Click the image to open in full size.

I was going to cancel the order for this, but ran into a couple of issues with the board and the fan on the Freezer 13. It was throttling the fan down which caused it to run at maximum rpms at anything less than 20%.

So it's now watercooled. CPU is sub 30C at idle, 60C at load ... in silent mode.

Struggling to get a stable overclock at 4.2GHz at the moment using the predefined settings so that's something to work on later.

It's a nice fit. I'm one of the lucky ones who got a 1 year warranty refurb rather than the 90 day it should have been.

I'm running it in quiet mode where it's almost silent. Temps are excellent, high 20s at idle, highest it's logged via Coretemp is 62C when I left it stress testing overnight. Tad noisy when powered on as it runs the fans at maximum then throttles back after about a minute.

I see what you mean about the initial start up but I guess that is before the motherboard tells the fans they don't need to spin at max.

When I've got my SSD I'll post up a video of my system, a little annoyed to say the least that the 500Gb didn't come into UK stock, just the 120 & 250

I've waited this long why not a little longer hahaha... if only I hadn't sold my M4 128Gb SSD d'oh!!

The H100 has it's own fan controller in the block/pump thingy which changes the fan speed according to the temperature. (I guess of the coolant?). There's a button on it that toggles between quiet/balanced/full modes.

There's been a few on OcUK whingeing about the stock fans being too noisy. Most of them are either running it them off the motherboard headers which keeps the minimum fan speed higher or in full mode (cause it's there, innit).

Wind tunnel noise for 5C low temps? No thanks!

How are you getting on with these parts Magic?
Bought the same board and chip, got 16gb mem instead of 8 though. Received my new waterblock today so will get mine up together on Saturday.

Fine, no problems at all.

Most exciting thing is I dropped the PC on the way back from a LAN bash. Only front panel damage miraculously, so ordered a replacement from Cooler Master.

Aggers watering it with a water hose does not give the same effect so enough of bringing it out to the garden.
