Ping info from wiki.....
ping is a computer network tool used to test whether a particular host is reachable across an IP network; it is also used to self test the network interface card of the computer, or as a latency test. It works by sending ICMP “echo request” packets to the target host and listening for ICMP “echo response” replies. Ping measures the round-trip time[1] and records any packet loss, and prints when finished a statistical summary of the echo response packets received, the minimum, mean, max and in some versions the standard deviation of the round trip time.

low ping good for online gaming

Download is the theoretical maximum ammount of data your connection will allow you to receive. Upload is the same as download but how much data can be sent and ping is effectively the reaction time of your connection. THe higher the upload & download and the lower the ping the better

So how come i get a download speed of 5mb/sec, but when am actually downloading anythin it reaches about 64kb/sec? Somehow i think its all a load of shite. If i download an MP3 it should take 1 second. It takes 2 minutes. Whats all the rest of my so-called bandwidth doing? Lounging by the pool? We're being lied to somewhere!

Becasuse the server you are downloading from can't provide the data at a fast enough rate. That's why it's the theoretical maximum.

Think of it as a water system. The pipe coming into your house can accept 5000 litres of water a second but the place you are downloading from only has a pump cable of pumping 640 litres a second.

10 gig is probably enough if you are not doing anything out of the ordinary but if you are dloading movies, tv shows, lots of songs or stream a lot of video or tv then you will be suprised how quickly 10 gig can go.

ok another question, can you have 2 ISP in one house?

For example we currently have sky broadband for the computer downstairs and mine upstairs. What i want to do is switch my PC to orange so we would have a sky internet downstairs and orange upstairs with 2 routers?

Not entirely sure on that one but I would think you would need to have a second phone line with new number installed. Best thing to do would be to phone Orange broadband and see what they say.

Different speed formats.
5mb - Mega-bit broadband, is not the same as 5MB - mega-byte.
64kbps is not the same as 64KB
The mega-bit and kbps are speeds, where as the mega-bytes and kilo-bytes are file sizes. Not sure exactly how it works out and the correct terminology. I can download at up 2mbps and upload at 90kbps, that's with 20mb broadband. Average download for an mp3 file (direct from server, direct connect and peer to peer is far slower) is around 20 seconds (going on average mp3 being 5MB). I can download a 700MB avi file in less than 15 minutes (peer to peer with good seed ratio).
Quote:
bit: minimum unit that handles a computer. (zero a one).
byte: it is a set of 8 bits and represents a character.
bps: (bit per seconds) unit of measurement of information transference.
bytes/s: (bytes per seconds) unit of measurement of transference of information in byte per second.

1 KB/s = 1024 bytes per second
1 kb/s = 1000 bits per second
1024 kb = 1 mb (megabyte)

The Internet connection speed is measured in Kilobits (Kb) which is different from Kilobytes (KB) the later being used to measure file sizes on a system.

Therefore if you ask for a 1Mbps broadband connection, it will take minimum 8 seconds to download a 1 MB file from the internet. Most Broadband companies define 1K as 1,000 and not as 1,024 which is the used for computing. So next time you are looking in to your internet speed do keep this in mind.

You can also install a bandwidth monitoring software that will track your internet usage behind the scenes and assist you diagnose slow internet connections and whether the ISP is giving your the promised speed or not.

At a 10 Mb connection via a phone line, that actually isn't bad at all. Seems like Tank's the one with the problems now!

Well maybe that was an exaggeration, since it was done at work... but I would quite fancy 55+MB upload for home!
