No need to bash the PS4 over one persons opinion guys. So far only person has felt the need to bash and we've all responded without stooping to his level. PS4 will be a great console just like the Xbone

It's a consumer good therefore the laws of supply and demand apply. If it's overpriced then Microsoft will be sat on a mountain of unsold stock, and will have to reduce the price to shift units until they sell in equilibrium. *Cough* Surface *Cough*

Xbox pre-orders are sold out, and BNIB Xbox Ones's are ú550+ on eBay. Pretty conclusive proof MS got the price right and Jam is mistaken.

going back a few month when the reveals were made I was dead set on getting the PS4.

I think its a fantastic bit of kit, but the selling point of the XB1 for me was FM5 and the fact that GT was not going to be a launch title for PS4.

As spiny said, to get the best out of either machine, we need both to be on top of their game so they keep on pushing each other to the limits of what each machine can do. If this happens we all win, not only with the games, but also what new features they will add to try and take top spot in this next gen war.

i have no problem with proprietary connections as long as there is reason for doing it, for example, if Microsoft have realised how shitty the old connections were, and have improved them., that's fine. If it is just to enforce a resale, then it isn't. obviously the new xbox is for the former.

Trouble is, by going HDMI only on the output from the console, anyone who doesn't have an HDMI TV (I know I'm not the only one) has to buy an adapter to be able to use it... and if component is so much worst than HDMI I'm still not gaining anything.

i'd agree with that, component HD is still relatively new in tech terms, but i guess to include that they would need to make a proprietary connector again to be able to deliver both, which would make it larger/hotter and bump up deveoplment and final cost, so i understand the thought process.

Seriously Spiny - how old is your TV? The last one I saw without an HDMI port was a CRT.

The cost of a decent format converter would get you most of the way to a 24" 1080p monitor with HDMI.

Consoles, Sky boxes etc have gone HDMI only for a couple of reasons :
1) Cost - just about any HDTV made in the last 10 years has an HDMI port. It's the modern equivalent of a SCART socket. Adding analogue video would increase the price of every console for the 99% that don't use it.
2) Copy protection. Component being analogue they can't prevent people copying Blu-Rays. movie rentals etc off it. Laters PS3s played Blu-Ray in SD over component for this reason.
3) Component video doesn't support 1080p in most devices.

there's barely ANY difference with HDMI and component HD, the most noticable difference would possibly be the sound, if you are using a system and in a room where you could tell the difference.

this is a pretty good example: http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/fkRiTXSfLjw/maxresdefault.jpg

some things could even potentially look better represented through analogue over digital, having the most accurate picture does not always mean the best looking.

There's one major difference - 1080p. You can't show a nice image for that ... as most component displays won't accept it.

at 60hz your eyes can't tell the difference between a progressive scanned display and an interlaced display.

technically, an interlaced display is refreshing 120 times per 60 frames, due to it's interlaced nature so is actually twice as fast.

pro's and cons for both, that's why they both still exist.

Technically not right. 1080i displays HALF the frames 120 times a second, odds 60 times evens too.
Hence why you CAN see the difference, and 1080p does look smoother (to most) Put the same screen with the same source next to each other one on 1080p and one on 1080, you will notice. If they are not next to each other, you'd be hard pushed. Hence why high end tvs are usually on display next to not so good ones, so the difference is clear.

All of this, is relative anyway. Component, hdmi, 1080i and 1080p.

The MAIN factor in the video performance and how it appears is the source device and how it was designed to be used. As MS and PS are both designed and built to use HDMI at 1080p, that will look better from them, without question.

Not quite what I meant you geeks ! I meant normal components out. We just gave our lad our old 37 inch hd tv for his bedroom and he was using the normal 3 inputs and it looked meh. I found an unused hdmi lead I had and swapped over and it was night and day different!

You'd be surprised, my bedroom TV is a 32" from about 7 years ago but it only has a component in, no HDMI. Got a nice 40" as my main TV though.

As with Hammy, it's not all that old - it'll be eight come Christmas. I think I'm paying the price for being an early(ish) LCD adopter - the first batch of my TV came over to GB without HDMI, but the following batches had it. That said, it is "HD Ready" - i.e. can run 720p or 1080i, and if I'm honest I suspect my eyes are going to be the weak link in the chain rather than the TV.

Already got the adapter though:

eSynic« 1080P HDMI to 5 RCA RGB Ypbpr AV Component: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics

Not sure why it's now four times what I paid for it though

Ouch now I am not that much of a fan boy but Sony seem to be getting what happened to the original Xbox 360 a build quality issue.

Hopefully these failures are lust down to a bad batch and not a design fault due to rushing to get the console out?? And I'm just hoping the Xbox One doesn't have any gremlins come next friday

That's the figure people keep throwing about but the truth could be different. And even if true, it's still a lot of unhappy people. How many have bought it as a Chrimbo pressie for kids only to find come the 25th they have a brick.

I don't know how they came up with that number as it was only a couple of hours after the launch when they tweeted it apparently,I hope it's not a recurring issue as Spiny stated compition between both is a good thing
I think it was 0.4% which is still 4000 for every million sold
