250cc Super Kart

After the horrible 125cc karts, the 250 SuperKarts are actually rather fun to drive and a lot more car like, but not quite lol.

Anyway I have just done a very quick tune and I am sure Spiny will be able to improve upon this a hell of a lot ( and will probs change every setting I have ), but here is the tune I am using for these karts.

Front pressure - 1.30Bar
Rear pressure - 1.45Bar
Brake pressure - 90%
Brake balance - 50%
Traction Control slip - 10%

Rear Downforce - 3.0
Weight bias - 53.0%

Steering ratio - 9.8:1
Caster angle - 15.0
Front Camber - -1.0
Rear Camber - 0.0
Front toe-in - 0.0

Front sway - 70
Rear sway - 20

Bump stops cant be changed from 0mm, no matter where you move the slider

Gearing is stock

Fuel load - 8l
Qualify - 4l
Brake mapping - 3

Only had a mess about on Dubai Aerodrome club and done a best of 54.2xx

This was the 'car' I was tuning when I accidentally deleted my save I think you're pretty close to getting there to be honest - if memory serves I think I got mine down to about 53.7, but 54's and 55's were more standard fare.

Sadly, as the tune was still a work in progress (albeit one close to completion), I don't have it written down so will have to start over again when it comes round.

However, there is one thing which you wrote which I would have to disagree with:

As far as I can tell, the 0mm is a UI issue and moving the slider does make a difference, hence why when I do a tune on a car with "no" bump stops I usually write down how many clicks in from one end or the other. Funnily enough, it was the Superkart which convinced me of this - it was much better on the cut-through section of the Dubai track with high bump stops than low so this setting could affect your result.

Not confirmed by any means. It just seems to tie in with the car behaviour, that's all.

I don't think I've seen it written anywhere.

And finally I've caught back up. Only took about two months although there were some additional invitationals in there too.

Anyway, after some tinkering, this is where I ended up with for Dubai Club and the Dubai Masters race. Best time I've managed in it was 52.732s, but unfortunately I can't tell how good it is (or bad!) as there isn't a kart leaderboard on this track

Tyres & Brakes
Compound: Automatic by Weather
Front Tyre Pressure: 1.14 Bar
Rear Tyre Pressure: 1.32 Bar
Brake Pressure: 95%
Brake Balance: 52%

Aero & Chassis
Rear Downforce: 1.0
Longitudinal Weight Bias: 55.5%

Alignment
Steering Ratio: 13.3:1
Caster: 12.9 deg
Front Camber: -1.5 deg
Rear Camber: 0 deg (doesn't seem to make much difference however you adjust it)
Front Toe-in: -1.2 deg

Suspension
Front Sway Bar: 15 N/mm
Rear Sway Bar: 15 N/mm

Dampers
Front Bump Stops: 0mm (Line arrow up with "B" of "Front Left Bump Stop"
Rear Bump Stops: 0mm (Line arrow up with "m" of "Rear Right Bump Stop"

Gearing
Final Drive: 2.52
1st: 3.00
2nd: 2.14
3rd: 1.57
4th: 1.35
5th: 1.22
6th: 1.10

Engine
Fuel Load: 4l
Qually Load: 4l
Brake Mapping: 5

Be warned that it is a bit tricky for the first lap if you go out on cold tyres. In some ways it's an odd car in that I was setting the best times when the outside tyres were bordering on red - certainly it felt better then than it did when all the tyres were green, and on blue tyres you need to take care!

EDIT: Looking at it I've realised Moon was almost right when he said I'd have every setting different to him - only the qually fuel and individual gears are the same

With the Championship Series starting at Oulton Fosters, I decided I needed a high downforce setup. Made a few other amendments (in bold blue as well to help make it more stable while also trying to reduce the understeer in fast corners maximum downforce can generate. After beating the AI by 5 seconds a lap (on a 50 second lap) on my usual level of 80%, I eventually ended up winding the AI up to 100%... and still beating them by 18 seconds over a 15 lap race despite a number of spins due to overattacking kerbs (hint: don't attack kerbs!). Pretty pleased with the way it's ended up.

Tyres & Brakes
Compound: Automatic by Weather
Front Tyre Pressure: 1.14 Bar
Rear Tyre Pressure: 1.32 Bar

Alignment
Steering Ratio: 12.8:1

Front Toe-in: -0.6 deg

Suspension
Front Sway Bar: 22 N/mm
Rear Sway Bar: 25 N/mm

Front Bump Stops: 0mm (Line arrow up with "B" of "Front Left Bump Stop"
Rear Bump Stops: 0mm (Line arrow up with "m" of "Rear Right Bump Stop"

Still a bit tricky on cold tyres, but just go gentle on the first couple of laps of practice and you'll be fine. Tyres are warmed up for qualifying and the race anyway. Have to admit though that it's only when I've typed it up on here that I've realised just how many settings I've changed from Dubai.

This tune also works pretty well around Donington, just with two minor tweaks:

Firstly, I dropped the rear tyre pressure to 1.30. And secondly, I changed the final drive ratio to 2.63:1 as it was topping out on the straight with the old ratio.

The end result is something which still lets me run at 100% AI - in fact I managed to lap the field in the main race which was a surprise, but a good sign for the tune.

Last race of the UK series for Season 2 is at Snetterton 200. I've gone for a lower downforce tune since there's quite a few more straights. The tune works fine once the tyres are warmed up, but it's best kept off the grass. As usual,

Changes from the Oulton Park tune are in bold green.

EDIT:Made some changes when I came up against the same track in the second half of the second season. These have made the kart a bit more stable under braking and also less likely to kick the back end out if you're a bit greedy with the throttle. The tune won't suit every track by a long way, but it did gain me over a second around Snet 200 on what I had before. All amendments from the earlier Snet tune are struck through and bolded.

Tyres & Brakes
Compound: Automatic by Weather
Front Tyre Pressure: 1.14 Bar
Rear Tyre Pressure: 1.30 Bar 1.34 Bar

Cool. I just jumped into one of these round dubai last night. So much better than my 125 experience. I'll put the tune on later.

The 250's are so much better than the 125's aren't they.

I saw a post from Ian Bell (SMS's version of Beardy Dan, only with less beard and more communication) where he said that the 125's are off because they were originally modelled to have a shed-load of chassis flex, but it proved difficult to get chassis flex into the physics model to any degree of satisfaction - when the flex got removed so did what was the great handling of the 125s.
